About Artist Leslie Love

Exploring Mediums to Create Meaning in Art

I am artist Leslie Love, born and raised on Vancouver Island, down a winding dead-end road on a piece of land called Song Farm, where I currently reside with my family once again. In 2003, I completed my BFA with Honors in Visual Arts at the University of Victoria, focusing on drawing, photography, and painting.

Mixing Personal Story, Materials, and Environment

My multimedia works often incorporate nostalgic family imagery alongside found, thrifted, gifted, and natural handmade materials. I create a dialogue between materials, human nature and our environment, allowing the imperfections in the materials—like wood grain, texture, and flaws—to show through. These details reflect both the process and the concept behind each piece.

Focusing on Connection, Empathy, and Relationships

I am deeply drawn to exploring relationships through my art. I focus on connection, empathy, and respect for both the environment and people. Lately, I’ve been exploring how the world’s shift toward superficial connections—through social media and algorithmic biases—has affected our empathy for others. Through my work, I hope to inspire deeper, more authentic conversations and highlight the importance of real-world relationships. Allowing myself to make art, feels like an expression of resistance to me.

Her art celebrates the beauty of imperfections, exposing the unique qualities of materials—wood grain, texture, and flaws—to reflect the process and concept behind each piece. Leslie’s work explores relationships between people, emphasizing connection, empathy, and respect for both the environment and one another.

In response to the current social climate, she is particularly interested in exploring themes of social and environmental justice, reflecting on the ways our world has shifted towards superficial connections through social media, algorithm-driven biases, and a troubling lack of empathy for diverse genders, cultures, and experiences. Through her work, Leslie seeks to inspire deeper, more authentic conversations and a renewed focus on real-world relationships and collective healing.
